Markets return from the Labor Day holiday to a busier calendar, with attention quickly shifting back to inflation and the Federal Reserve. After August payrolls rose a stronger-than-expected 162,000, investors will be particularly sensitive to whether inflation data reinforce or challenge expectations for additional tightening.
Tuesday brings the NFIB Small Business Index and consumer credit, while Wednesday is relatively light outside mortgage applications. The calendar accelerates Thursday with PPI, weekly jobless claims and several major earnings reports, including Adobe, Oracle, Copart and Macy’s. Treasury supply will also remain in focus after yields moved modestly higher last week.
Friday’s August CPI report is the key event. Core inflation is expected to remain firm, making the release an important input ahead of the September Fed decision. Preliminary Michigan consumer sentiment will provide an additional read on households and inflation expectations. Earnings season is quieter overall, with Kroger among Friday’s notable reporters.
