Markets enter the week with attention shifting from inflation toward housing, Fed policy, and the health of the consumer. Recent softer inflation readings have reduced expectations for additional Fed tightening, making Wednesday’s FOMC minutes an important window into policymakers’ thinking and the balance of risks heading into September.
Housing takes center stage early, with Monday’s NAHB Housing Market Index followed by Tuesday’s housing starts, building permits, and pending home sales. Friday’s preliminary manufacturing and services PMIs will then provide a broader look at August economic momentum and whether growth is holding up as financial conditions remain restrictive.
Earnings are increasingly retail-focused as the broader reporting season winds down. Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, TJX, Walmart, and Ross Stores will offer important reads on consumer spending, while Deere provides additional insight into industrial and agricultural demand.
